In the panorama of the various amount of digital services that characterise our hyper-connected everyday life, the interest in digitisation, digitised resources and systems to make these resources usable – so called digital libraries – places the emphasis on the decisive technological leap forward made by the open standards which govern the Web. In this context, the undoubted protagonist is certainly the International Image Interoperability Framework, better known by its acronym IIIF, which has, to say the least, revolutionised the way in which everyone can freely use digitised resources in a multi-platform mode. Thanks to IIIF, libraries and digital collections that were previously isolated or dispersed are now open to global use. IIIF has, in fact, concretely realised what we have been waiting for and theorising about for a long time, i.e. the effective accessibility, usability and interoperability of digital resources via the Internet.
